Broughton is a small place in South Park Township, Pennsylvania, United States. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area, like a township or county.

Broughton was first called Curry. It got this name from Joseph Curry, who was an important person in the area way back in 1810. He was a doctor and also a coroner for Allegheny County. The name was changed to Broughton later on. This was to avoid confusion with other places nearby that were also called Curry, like Curry Hollow and another Curry in Blair County.

You can find Broughton where three roads meet: Brownsville Road, Curry Road, and Broughton Road.

Broughton's History and Community

Broughton has an interesting past, especially when it comes to its community and the jobs that brought people there.

A Place for Everyone

In the early 1900s, Broughton became a place where people from many different backgrounds lived and worked together. This is sometimes called being "racially integrated." Many people moved to Broughton because of the coal mines nearby. They came to work in these mines, and this helped create a diverse and welcoming community.

The Coal Mining Connection

Broughton was very important for coal mining. It was home to the No. 5 mine of the Pittsburgh Terminal Coal Company. Coal mining was a big industry in Pennsylvania, and places like Broughton grew because of it. Miners would dig deep underground to find coal, which was used for energy and heating. This work brought many families to the area, shaping the community that Broughton became.
