How did Curryville get its name?

Curryville wasn't always called that! Its first name was "Little Row." This name came from a local Native American leader who lived in the area a long time ago.

A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, was first set up in Little Row in 1883. Later, in 1895, the community's name was changed to Curryville. This new name was chosen to honor David W. Curry, who was a local pharmacist. A pharmacist is someone who prepares and sells medicines. The post office in Curryville eventually closed down in 1955.

Even though Curryville is a small community, a very famous person was born there! His name was Roland Hayes. He was a talented composer, which means he wrote music. He was also a celebrated lyric tenor. A tenor is a type of male singer with a high vocal range, and "lyric" means his voice was light and smooth. Roland Hayes became very well-known for his beautiful singing.
