Curtly Hampton's AFL Journey
Playing for Greater Western Sydney (2012–2015)
Curtly was one of the very first players to join the Giants. He was chosen from the Northern Territory in 2010. He had been the captain of the Australian Institute of Sport academy team. Many people thought he was similar to the famous Adelaide Crows player, Andrew McLeod.
In February 2011, Curtly kicked the Greater Western Sydney Giants' first-ever goal. This happened in a game against an Under 21s team from AFL Sydney.
Making His AFL Debut
Curtly made his official AFL debut in the Giants' very first AFL game. This was in Round 1 of 2012 against the Sydney at ANZ Stadium. In his first year, he played 17 matches. He played both in attack and in defence for the team.
In 2013, Curtly became a strong running defender. This was a new position for him in the AFL. He played 18 matches that year. He showed a lot of improvement from his first season.
Dealing with Injuries
Curtly started the 2014 season very well. He was a star player at half-back for the first seven games. However, injuries stopped him later in the season. He had a shoulder injury that kept him out for six weeks.
In 2015, he played only five games. He played very well in the NEAFL. But he found it hard to make a big impact when he played in the AFL. At the end of 2015, Curtly decided to look for a new team. He was traded to the Adelaide Football Club. The Giants received a 2016 second-round draft pick in return.
Playing for Adelaide (2016–2018)
Curtly's fresh start at the Adelaide Crows was delayed. He had a foot injury that kept him from playing for the entire 2016 season.
He finally made his debut for the Crows in Round 1, 2017. It was against his old team, the Giants. On July 18, 2018, Curtly Hampton announced his retirement. He decided to stop playing professional football.
