Cyclone is a small, unincorporated community located in Monroe County, Kentucky, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that does not have its own local government, like a city or town.

How Cyclone, Kentucky, Got Its Name

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? Cyclone, Kentucky, has a very interesting and powerful story behind its name. It was named after a huge and destructive tornado, also known as a cyclone, that hit the area in 1890.

The Great Tornado of 1890

On March 27, 1890, a series of powerful tornadoes swept across several states, causing a lot of damage. One of these tornadoes struck the area where Cyclone, Kentucky, is now located. This storm was so strong that it sadly caused several deaths. A post office was set up in the community in 1891, and it was officially named "Cyclone" to remember this significant event.

Tornado Impacts in Louisville

As part of the same widespread storm system, another tornado hit Louisville, Kentucky, a much larger city. This tornado was incredibly fast, lasting only about five minutes. Even in that short time, it destroyed several buildings. For example, the Falls City Hall was badly damaged, trapping around 200 people inside. The tornado also hit the Waterworks stand tower, which could have cut off the water supply for the entire city. Luckily, the water supply was not completely lost.
