Cynthia Ellinor Beatrix Spencer, Countess Spencer, was born on August 16, 1897. She was a British noblewoman and is best known as the grandmother of Diana, Princess of Wales. Her maiden name was Hamilton.

Early Life and Family
Cynthia Hamilton was the daughter of James Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn, and Lady Rosalind Cecilia Caroline Bingham. Her father later became the 3rd Duke of Abercorn. Her mother's parents were Charles Bingham, 4th Earl of Lucan, and Lady Cecilia Catherine Gordon-Lennox.
On February 26, 1919, Cynthia Hamilton married Viscount Althorp. Their wedding took place in London.
They had two children:
- Lady Anne Spencer (born in 1920). She became an officer in the Women's Royal Naval Service. In 1944, she married Christopher Baldwin Hughes Wake-Walker, a Captain in the Royal Navy.
- Edward John Spencer (born in 1924). He later became the 8th Earl Spencer.
Life at Court
Countess Spencer was an important part of the royal household. In 1937, she was chosen to be a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth. This role meant she was a close attendant to the Queen.
She continued in this position even after Queen Elizabeth became the Queen Mother in 1952. Countess Spencer served the Queen Mother until her death.
Grandmother of Princess Diana
Countess Spencer was the grandmother of Diana, Princess of Wales. Diana was the daughter of Countess Spencer's son, Edward John Spencer.
Countess Spencer passed away at the Spencer family home, Althorp, on December 4, 1972. She was 75 years old. A hospice in Northampton, called the Cynthia Spencer Hospice, is named in her memory.
Awards and Recognition
Countess Spencer received several important awards for her service:
On June 4, 1943, she was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).
On June 1, 1953, she was honored as a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (DCVO).
