Cyperus difformis is a type of plant called a sedge. It has many common names, like variable flatsedge and rice sedge. This plant naturally grows in southern Europe, most of Africa and Asia, and Australia. It has also spread to other parts of the world, including large areas of the Americas.
Where it Grows
This plant loves wet places. You can find Cyperus difformis in watery areas and moist soil. It often grows in rice fields. Even though it's a weed, it usually doesn't cause big problems for rice farmers.
What it Looks Like
Cyperus difformis is an annual herb. This means it lives for only one growing season. It has thin, soft stems that stand upright. These stems can grow taller than 30 centimeters (about 12 inches).
There are usually a few long, thin leaves. They grow around the bottom part of the plant.
The Flowers
The plant's flowers grow in a round cluster. This cluster is called an inflorescence. It is usually one to three centimeters wide. Each cluster can have up to 120 small flower groups. These groups are called spikelets.
Each spikelet is long and covered with many tiny flowers. There can be up to 30 flowers on each spikelet. Small leaf-like parts called bracts protect these flowers. The flowers are light brown. They often have darker brown spots. Sometimes they might look a bit yellowish or purplish too.
