Genus:
Cyrtandra
Species:
oenobarba

Cyrtandra oenobarba is a very rare flowering plant. It belongs to the African violet family. People also call it the shaggystem cyrtandra. This plant is special because it only grows in Hawaii. You can find it only on the island of Kauai.

There are fewer than 500 of these plants left in nature. They grow in just three small areas on Kauai. Because it is so rare, the United States government listed it as an endangered species in 2010. This means it needs special protection to survive. Like other Cyrtandra plants in Hawaii, it is also known by the Hawaiian name ha`iwale.

About the Shaggystem Cyrtandra

The shaggystem cyrtandra is a type of small shrub. It was once much more common across Kauai. Scientists found it in many different places on the island a long time ago. Now, it is much harder to find.

Where the Shaggystem Cyrtandra Lives

This plant loves wet places. It grows in inland valleys where there is lots of rain. You can often find it in very wet habitats. These include bogs and mossy rocks. It especially likes areas near waterfalls. This is because these spots stay wet all the time.

Why This Plant Is Endangered

The places where the shaggystem cyrtandra lives are in danger. Two main things are harming its habitat.

  • Wild Pigs: Feral pigs are pigs that live in the wild. They can damage the plant's habitat by rooting around. They dig up the soil and disturb the plants.
  • New Plants: Some plants from other places have been brought to Hawaii. These "exotic" plants can grow very fast. They take over the space and resources that native plants like the shaggystem cyrtandra need to survive.

Protecting these special wet areas is very important. It helps keep the shaggystem cyrtandra from disappearing forever.
