Cándida Martínez López (born 6 December 1951) is a Spanish historian, university professor, and politician. She is known for her work in women's history. From 2000 to 2008, she was in charge of Education for the Regional Government of Andalusia. Later, from 2008 to 2011, she served as a member of the Spanish Parliament. She also helps lead Arenal, Journal of Women's History

Early Life and Education
Cándida Martínez López earned her highest degree, a doctorate, in Geography and History. She studied at the University of Granada in Spain. She became a professor of Ancient History at the same university. She has also been a visiting professor at universities in other countries. These include the Sapienza University of Rome and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
From 1990 to 1996, she made history at the University of Granada. She was the first woman to become the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. A Dean is like a principal for a specific part of the university.
Research on Women's History
Throughout her career, Cándida Martínez López has focused on the history of women. She has studied women in ancient Mediterranean societies. Her research also covers topics like women and peace, and motherhood. She explores how to study history from a feminist point of view.
She was part of a group of professors who started Women's Studies in Spain. This led to the creation of the Seminar on Women's Studies. Later, they formed the University Institute of Women's and Gender Research and Studies
. She was the director of this institute in 2000.At the University of Granada, she taught many classes about women's and gender studies. She taught students in history programs and special gender studies courses. She also helped coordinate a doctoral program focused on women's studies.
She also helped start the Spanish Women's History Association (AEIHM). She co-founded Arenal, Journal of Women's History
. She is still a co-director of this important journal.Political Career
Cándida Martínez López joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in 1996. She became a member of the Parliament of Andalusia. In 2000, she was chosen to be the Councilor of Education for the Regional Government of Andalusia. This meant she was like the Minister of Education for the region. She held this important role until 2008.
During her time as Education Councilor, she also led the Parque de las Ciencias (Science Park) in Granada. This was from 2000 to 2008.
In 2008, she ran for the national parliament in Spain. She was elected to the Congress of Deputies. There, she was the main spokesperson for education for her political party. From 2008 to 2012, she was also part of her party's national leadership. In this role, she was responsible for education and culture.
