About Céline Cousteau
Her Family and Early Life
Céline Cousteau comes from a family of famous explorers. She is the third generation to explore the world. Her father, Jean-Michel Cousteau, makes films and works to protect the environment. Her mother, Anne-Marie Cousteau, is a photographer who goes on expeditions. Céline's brother, Fabien Cousteau, also explores the ocean and helps sharks. Her grandfather was Jacques Cousteau, a pioneer in ocean exploration. Céline grew up living in both France and the United States.
Céline spent some of her childhood on her grandfather's research ship, the Calypso. When she was nine, she went on a big trip to the Amazon River. This expedition lasted 18 months, and Céline spent two weeks exploring its waters. She saw parts of the Amazon that were still mostly unknown to people outside. This trip taught Céline how everything in nature is connected. It also showed her how people and nature are linked. This idea has inspired all her films, art, and work to help the planet.
Céline has one son with her partner, Çapkin van Alphen.
Her Education
Céline went to school at Norfolk Academy in Virginia. She also attended the United Nations International School in New York City. In 1994, she graduated from Skidmore College. There, she studied psychology and art. She later earned a master's degree from the School for International Training. She also received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Aveiro.
Céline's Work
Making Films for Change
Céline Cousteau is the founder and CEO of CauseCentric Productions. This company creates and shares videos, especially short films. These films help share the stories of people and groups working to solve environmental and social problems. Céline also helped start the Outdoor Film Fellowship. This program helped young filmmakers and artists learn how to use stories to inspire change.
In 2019, Céline released her first full-length documentary film, Tribes on Edge. She first visited the Vale do Javari Indigenous territory in the Brazilian Amazon in 2007. This was for a PBS documentary called "Return to the Amazon." In 2010, the Indigenous people there asked her to come back. They wanted her to tell their story to the world. Céline spent time with the tribes of the Vale do Javari in the Brazilian Amazon. Their way of life is increasingly threatened by the modern world.
