Growing Up as an Explorer
Céline Cousteau is the third generation in her family to be an explorer. She was born in California. Her father, Jean-Michel Cousteau, makes documentaries and works to protect the environment. Her mother, Anne-Marie Cousteau, is a photographer who joined expeditions. Céline's brother is Fabien Cousteau, who also explores the ocean and helps protect sharks. Her grandfather was Jacques Cousteau, a pioneer in ocean exploration. Céline spent her childhood living in both France and the United States.
Adventures on the Calypso
When she was young, Céline spent time on her grandfather's famous research ship, the Calypso. One of her most memorable trips was at age nine. She traveled to the Amazon River! This expedition lasted 18 months, and Céline spent two weeks exploring its waters. She saw parts of the Amazon that were still a mystery to most people. This trip taught her how everything in nature is connected. It also showed her how people and nature are linked. This idea has inspired all her films, art, and activism.
Céline has one son with her partner, Çapkin van Alphen, who is a cameraman from Australia.
Education and Learning
Céline went to school at Norfolk Academy in Virginia. She also attended the United Nations International School in New York City. In 1994, she graduated from Skidmore College. There, she studied psychology and also took art classes. She later earned a master's degree from the SIT Graduate Institute. This degree was in International and Intercultural Management. She also received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Aveiro.

This was for a PBS documentary called "Return to the Amazon." In 2010, the Indigenous people there asked her to come back. They wanted her to share their story with the world.
