Călin Gruia (born Chiril Gurduz on March 21, 1915 – July 9, 1989) was a famous Romanian writer. He is best known for his wonderful fairy tales and poems written especially for children.

Who Was Călin Gruia?

Călin Gruia was born in a village called Trifești. This area was once part of the Russian Empire. Today, it is in Moldova. His parents, Vartolomeu and Alexandrina, were farmers.

His Early Life and Education

Călin Gruia finished school in Orhei in 1936. The next year, he completed his training to become a reserve officer. Between 1937 and 1939, he worked as a teacher. He taught in villages like Tvardița and Umbrărești.

Working in Television and Writing

Călin Gruia served in the army from 1939 to 1940. He also fought in World War II. After the war, from 1951 to 1969, he worked at Romanian Television. He helped create and edit children's programs. He wrote over 50 radio scripts for these shows. In 1958, the radio program became a television show. It was very popular and ran for 50 years!

He wrote for many magazines too. Some of these were Cutezătorii, Luminița, and Arici Pogonici. His first poems and stories were published in 1938. His first book of poems, Litanii de seară, came out in 1942. Ten years later, he published a collection of stories called Nucul lui Toderiță.

Călin Gruia wrote many stories, legends, and even novels. He also wrote scripts for history-themed films. Many of his works were translated into other languages. People remember him as one of Romania's most important children's writers. Even in 2012, his stories were still being performed in children's theater shows.
