Déirdre de Búrca was born on October 22, 1963. She is an Irish politician who used to be a member of the Green Party. She served as a Senator from 2007 to 2010. A Senator is like a lawmaker in one part of Ireland's parliament. She was chosen for this role by the Taoiseach, who is the head of the Irish government.
Before becoming a Senator, Déirdre de Búrca was a local politician. She was a member of the Wicklow County Council and the Bray Town Councillor. She held these positions from 1999 to 2007.

Early Life and Education
Déirdre de Búrca was born in Cork, a city in Ireland. She grew up in a place called Loughlinstown in County Dublin. She went to Ursuline Convent, which is now known as Cabinteely Community School.
After school, she studied at Carysfort College. There, she trained to become a primary school teacher. Later, she continued her studies at University College Dublin. She focused on psychology, which is the study of how people think and behave. After her studies, she worked as a psychologist for an organization called Rehab Ireland.
Local Politics and Public Service
Déirdre de Búrca became involved in local politics with the Green Party. She was elected to the Wicklow County Council in 1999. This council helps manage local services and decisions for County Wicklow. She was also elected to the Bray Town Council.
In 2004, she was re-elected to both councils. She even received more votes that time. During her time on the Wicklow County Council, she raised concerns about how some meetings were run. She believed that decisions, especially about planning, needed to be more open and fair.
Déirdre de Búrca also tried to become a member of Dáil Éireann, which is the main part of Ireland's parliament. She ran for election in 2002 and 2007 in the Wicklow area, but she was not elected. She also ran in the 2009 European Parliament election for the Dublin area, but she was not successful there either.
Becoming a Senator
In 2007, Déirdre de Búrca was chosen to be a Senator. The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, nominated her for this role. This was part of an agreement the Green Party made when they joined the government.
As a Senator, she was also appointed to a special committee. This committee was called the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs. It focused on matters related to Europe.
Leaving the Seanad
Déirdre de Búrca resigned from her position as a Senator on February 12, 2010. She also left the Green Party's group in parliament. She explained that she felt the party was no longer following its main values. She believed it had become too similar to another political party, Fianna Fáil.
She also stated that she had lost trust in John Gormley, who was the leader of the Green Party at the time. The Green Party said they were sad about her decision. They stated that they would continue to work on their policies in government.
