Early Government Roles
In February 1975, Désiré Rakotoarijaona became the Minister of Economy and Finance. This was a very important job, as he was in charge of managing Madagascar's money and economic plans. He held this position for a few months, until June 1975.
Serving as Prime Minister
On August 1, 1977, Désiré Rakotoarijaona was appointed as the Prime Minister of Madagascar. This is a very high position in a country's government, similar to a chief executive who helps the president run the country. He served under President Didier Ratsiraka. Rakotoarijaona was the Prime Minister for a long time, nearly eleven years, until February 12, 1988. After his time as Prime Minister, Victor Ramahatra took over the role.
Later Political Life
Even after his long service as Prime Minister, Désiré Rakotoarijaona remained interested in Madagascar's future. In November 1996, he decided to run for president in the 1996 Malagasy presidential election. There were many candidates, fifteen in total, who wanted to lead the country. Rakotoarijaona finished in last place in that election, receiving 0.37% of the votes.
