A School with a Long History
Building the First High School
The building was constructed in 1911 in a part of Tampa called Tampa Heights. It cost about $60,000 to build, which was a lot of money back then! This building was the only high school for all of Hillsborough County at the time.
The architect, William Potter, designed the building to be three stories tall. It was made of strong masonry blocks. The original design was a closed rectangle with an open space in the middle. Over the years, this open space has been mostly filled in.
Home to Many Schools
This building was the third location for Hillsborough County High School. It remained the school's home until 1928. That year, Hillsborough High School moved to its fourth and current campus. By then, the county had built another high school, Henry B. Plant High School. Because of this, the word "County" was dropped from the school's name.
After Hillsborough High School moved, the building continued to be used for education. From 1939 to 1967, it was home to Jefferson High School. Many students at Jefferson High School came from the Latino communities of Ybor City and West Tampa. These areas had large Hispanic and Italian populations.
Later, the building housed George Washington Junior High School. That school used the building until it closed in 1979.
D.W. Waters Career Center Today
Today, this historic building is still used for learning. It is now the home of the D.W. Waters Career Center. This center is part of Hillsborough County Public Schools. It focuses on giving students in 11th and 12th grade special training for different jobs.
The building received a big update and repair in 2003. This restoration helped keep the historic building in great shape for new generations of students.
