A Look at the School's History
The building that is now the D.W. Waters Career Center has a long and interesting past. It was built in 1911 in the Tampa Heights area of Tampa. Back then, it cost about $60,000 to build. This was a lot of money at the time!
The First High School Building
When it first opened, this building was the only high school in all of Hillsborough County. It was called Hillsborough County High School. An architect named William Potter designed the building. It had three stories and was shaped like a rectangle with an open space in the middle. Over the years, this open space has been mostly filled in.
This was the third place the high school had been located. It stayed here until 1928. Then, the school moved to a new building. When it moved, the name changed to Hillsborough High School. The word "County" was dropped because by then, other high schools had been built, like Henry B. Plant High School.
Other Schools in the Building
After Hillsborough High School moved out, the building continued to be used for education.
- From 1939 to 1967, it was home to Jefferson High School. Many students at Jefferson High were from the Latino communities of Ybor City and West Tampa. This meant the school had a large number of Hispanic and Italian students.
- After Jefferson High School moved, the building housed George Washington Junior High School. This school stayed there until it closed in 1979.
D.W. Waters Career Center Today
Today, this historic building is still used for learning! It is now the home of the D.W. Waters Career Center. This center is part of the Hillsborough County Public Schools. It helps students in 11th and 12th grade get ready for jobs. They learn important skills for different careers. The building was given a big update and restoration in 2003 to keep it in good shape.
