Tampa Heights is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Tampa. It is located in the central part of the city. In 2000, about 16,393 people lived here.

You can find historic buildings in the area, like the Tampa Free Library. The community is also getting a big update. This includes making the Tampa Riverwalk longer and fixing up Water Works Park (Tampa, Florida).

About Tampa Heights

Tampa Heights is surrounded by different areas. To the west is North Boulevard. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is to the north. Downtown Tampa is to the south. To the east, you'll find Ybor Heights, V.M. Ybor, and Ybor City. The neighborhood covers about 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2).

Thomas P. Kennedy is said to have named the area. He moved there in the 1880s and called it the "Highlands." It was one of Tampa's first suburbs. Today, Tampa Heights is known for its diverse community and its history. However, some changes are happening that are causing discussion. This is because new people are moving in and changing the area.

Who Lives in Tampa Heights?

In 2010, there were 5,782 people living in Tampa Heights. The people living here come from many different backgrounds.

  • About 59.4% were Black or African American.
  • About 32.4% were White.
  • About 21.3% were Hispanic or Latino.
  • A smaller number were from other groups, including Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American. Some people also identified with two or more races.

The population includes people of all ages. Many young people live here, with a good number of teens and young adults.

Exciting New Changes

Recently, many new people have moved to Tampa Heights. They want to help bring the area back to life. Lots of new businesses have opened, like art galleries and coffee shops.

A big new project called "The Heights of Tampa" has started. It will have both homes and businesses. This project will be at the northern end of the Tampa Riverwalk.

Another cool new spot is Armature Works. This is a huge building, about 73,000 square feet! It has places for events, cool restaurants and bars, and even a public market called Heights Public Market.

The Armature Works building is very old, built in 1910. It used to be a warehouse for TECO streetcars. You can easily get to Armature Works by walking along the Tampa Riverwalk.
