Who Was Dan Evehema?

Dan Evehema was a traditional leader of the Hopi people. A traditional leader helps guide their community based on ancient customs and beliefs. He was born around 1893 and lived a very long life, passing away on January 6, 1999, at about 106 years old.

Sharing Hopi Wisdom

In 1946, Dan Evehema and three other respected Hopi elders – Thomas Banyacya, David Monongye, and Dan Katchongva – made a big decision. They chose to share important Hopi teachings and prophecies with everyone. This was a significant moment because these teachings had mostly been kept secret within the Hopi nation. They felt it was important to share this knowledge after the world saw the power of atomic bombs.

His Important Books

Dan Evehema helped write several books that explain Hopi culture and prophecies. He co-authored "Hotevilla: Hopi Shrine of the Covenant : Microcosm of the World" with Thomas Mails. He also worked on "Hopi Survival Kit," which is special because it includes a signed statement from him. This book is considered the only written record of the complete Hopi prophecies. He also helped create "Techqua Ikachi," which were traditional Hopi newsletters published from 1975 to 1986.
