Dan Katchongva (born January 1, 1860, in Old Oraibi; died February 22, 1972, in Hotevilla) was an important Hopi Native American leader. He was known for sharing traditional Hopi wisdom with the world.
Dan Katchongva's father, Yukiuma, was a special keeper of the Fire Clan tablets. These tablets held important Hopi knowledge. Yukiuma also helped start the village of Hotevilla in 1906. Dan Katchongva was a member of the Sun Clan, another important group within the Hopi people.

Sharing Hopi Wisdom
In 1946, Dan Katchongva and three other respected Hopi elders made a big decision. They chose to share their traditional wisdom and teachings with everyone. This included ancient Hopi prophecies about the future. They felt it was important to do this after the first two nuclear weapons were used in Japan.
The Group of Four
Dan Katchongva was the oldest of these four wise Hopi leaders. The others were Thomas Banyacya, David Monongye, and Dan Evehema. They believed that sharing their knowledge was crucial for the world. Dan Katchongva was the first of the group to pass away.
His Message to the World
Dan Katchongva gave a special talk on January 29, 1970. This talk was later written down and published. It appeared in a traditional Hopi newsletter called Techqua Ikachi in 1972. His words have since been printed in many books and journals. You can also find them on the internet.
Hopi Prophecies
One of the important messages from Dan Katchongva was about a Hopi belief called "Purification Day." This is a prophecy about a time when the world will be cleansed. According to the East West Journal, Dan Katchongva's father told him he would live to see the start of this time. Dan Katchongva died in 1972.
Published Works
Dan Katchongva's important talk was also made into a small book. It was called "Hopi: A Message for All People." This booklet was published in 1975 by a group called White Roots of Peace. His words continue to teach people about Hopi traditions and their view of the future.
