After his second book came out, Dan felt frustrated with the publishing world. He even said he would stop writing. But he later explained, "I haven't really given up. I was just tired of the business." He meant he was tired of how books are published and sold.

In 2003, Dan Rhodes was named one of the "Best of Young British Novelists" by a magazine called Granta. This surprised him a lot. He found it strange that they judged writers on books they hadn't even written yet.

In 2014, Dan decided to publish a novel himself. The book was called When the Professor Got Stuck in the Snow. It's a funny story about a famous scientist visiting a small English village. He published it himself to get the book out faster.
