About Dan Rhodes

Dan Rhodes grew up in a place called Devon, England. He went to the University of Glamorgan, which is now known as the University of South Wales. He graduated in 1994 with a degree in Humanities. Later, in 1997, he went back to the same university. He completed a special master's degree in Creative Writing. One of his books, Don't Tell Me the Truth About Love, was written during this time.

His Many Jobs

Before becoming a full-time writer, Dan Rhodes had many different jobs. He worked in a stockroom for a bookstore called Waterstones. He also helped out as a barman in his parents' pub. For a while, he was a teacher in Ho Chi Minh City. He even worked on a farm, picking fruits and vegetables. Today, he still works as a postman, delivering mail.

Writing Challenges

After his second book came out, Dan Rhodes felt a bit tired of the publishing world. He even said he would stop writing. However, he later explained that he hadn't truly given up. He just felt frustrated with how the business worked. He said he was tired of everyone around him, not just the publishers.

Being Recognized

In 2003, Dan Rhodes was included on a special list by Granta magazine. This list featured the "Best of Young British Novelists." He was quite surprised and even a little confused by this. He thought it was strange to judge writers on books they hadn't even written yet. He also felt frustrated because some writers on the list did not want to join him in protesting the Iraq War.

Self-Publishing a Book

In 2014, Dan Rhodes decided to publish a novel himself. This book was called When the Professor Got Stuck in the Snow. It was a funny story about a famous scientist, a fictional Richard Dawkins, visiting a small English village. He chose to self-publish because he wanted the book to be available faster. Traditional publishing can take a long time.

Recent Works

In 2021, a book called Sour Grapes was published. This novel is a funny story about the world of books and writers. It takes place at a book festival in the countryside.

Dan Rhodes is married and has two children.
