History of Dana
Dana got its name a long time ago. A post office opened there in 1892. The community was named after Dana Hadley. He was the son of the person who originally owned the land where Dana is located.
Geography of Dana
Dana is in the eastern part of Henderson County. The center of the community is quite high up, about 2,256 feet (688 meters) above sea level. This area is special because it sits on the Eastern Continental Divide.
What is the Continental Divide?
Imagine a giant line across the land. On one side, all the rain and water flow towards the Atlantic Ocean. On the other side, the water flows towards the Gulf of Mexico. That's what a continental divide is!
In Dana, the eastern side of the community sends its water to the Hungry River. This river eventually joins bigger rivers like the Green River and Broad River, which all flow into the Atlantic Ocean.
The western side of Dana is different. Water from this side flows into Mud Creek. This creek is part of the French Broad River system, which eventually connects to the Tennessee River and then the mighty Mississippi River. All that water ends up in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dana is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Hendersonville. Hendersonville is the main town, or "county seat," of Henderson County. Dana is also about 28 miles (45 kilometers) southeast of Asheville, a larger city nearby.
