The Danbury Mad Hatters were a professional ice hockey team based in Danbury, Connecticut. They played their games at the Danbury Ice Arena, which could hold 3,050 fans. The Mad Hatters were a member of the Eastern Professional Hockey League.
The team's name, Mad Hatters, came from Danbury's old nickname, "Hat City." Long ago, Danbury was a major center for making hats. At one point, the city produced about 25% of all hats in America! The word "mad" was added to make the team's name different from local high school teams. It also refers to the common saying, "mad as a hatter," which means someone is a bit crazy or eccentric.
The team was owned by Tim Kolpien. On June 10, 2008, it was announced that Dave MacIsaac would be the head coach of the Mad Hatters. MacIsaac was a former defenceman for another Danbury team, the Danbury Trashers.
