The team's name, Mad Hatters, came from Danbury's old nickname, "Hat City." Danbury was once a major center for making hats. At one point, it produced about 25% of all hats made in America! The word "mad" was added to make the team's name different from local high school teams. It also referred to the saying "mad as a hatter."
