Daniel Brown (born December 25, 1945) is a former city councilman and former acting mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee. He made history as the first African American to serve as mayor of the city.

Early Life and Education
Daniel Brown was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on December 25, 1945. He grew up in Knoxville and attended Austin High School. After high school, he went on to study at Tennessee State University. There, he earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in history.
Military Service and Career
Before his career in public service, Daniel Brown was a Vietnam War veteran. This means he served in the United States military during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He later retired from this job.
Becoming Mayor of Knoxville
Daniel Brown was a member of the Knoxville City Council. In 2011, the mayor at the time, Bill Haslam, resigned from his position. Mayor Haslam left office to run for governor of Tennessee.
When the mayor resigned, the city council needed to choose someone to serve as mayor temporarily. They selected Daniel Brown for this important role. This made him the 81st Mayor of Knoxville.

Daniel Brown's selection as acting mayor was a very important moment for Knoxville. He became the first African American person to serve as mayor of the city. He served as acting mayor from January 10, 2011, until December 17, 2011.
