Daniel Brown (born December 25, 1945) is a former leader in the city of Knoxville, Tennessee. He served as a city councilman for many years. He also became the first African American to serve as the acting mayor of Knoxville.
Early Life and Education
Daniel Brown was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on December 25, 1945. He grew up in the city where he would later become a leader.
He went to Austin High School and graduated from there. After high school, he continued his education at Tennessee State University. He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in history.
Brown also served his country. He is a Vietnam War veteran. Later, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years before retiring.
Becoming Mayor
Daniel Brown was a member of the Knoxville City Council. In 2011, the mayor at the time, Bill Haslam, decided to leave his job. Mayor Haslam wanted to run for governor of Tennessee.
Because the mayor resigned, the city council needed someone to step in. They chose Daniel Brown to be the acting mayor. This was a very important moment for Knoxville. Daniel Brown became the first African American mayor in the city's history.
He served as acting mayor from January 10, 2011, to December 17, 2011. He did not run for a full term as mayor. After his time as acting mayor, he continued to serve on the city council. Madeline Rogero became the next mayor of Knoxville.
