Daniel Ciugureanu (born December 9, 1885 – died May 19, 1950) was an important Romanian politician. He came from a region called Bessarabia. He served as the Prime Minister of the Moldavian Democratic Republic. He also held several important roles in the Romanian government, including being a minister and a leader in the Romanian Parliament.
Early Life and Education
Daniel Ciugureanu was born in 1885 in a village called Șirăuți. This area was part of Bessarabia, which was then controlled by the Russian Empire. His father, Alexandru, was a priest, and his mother, Ecaterina, was a teacher.
He went to secondary school in Bălți. Later, he studied at a theological seminary in Chișinău. In 1905, he began studying medicine at the Kyiv Imperial University of Saint Vladimir. He finished his medical degree in 1912 and became a surgeon.
Political Career
Ciugureanu was one of the people who started the National Moldavian Party. This party worked to promote the idea of Bessarabia joining Romania.
In 1918, a special council called the Sfatul Țării (which means "Country Council") was formed. This council decided that the Moldavian Democratic Republic should become independent. Daniel Ciugureanu was chosen to be the Prime Minister of this new republic. He had actually been chosen for this role a few weeks earlier.
After Bessarabia officially joined Romania, Daniel Ciugureanu continued his political work. He served as a minister for Bessarabia in four different Romanian governments. This was from April 1918 to November 1919. He also became a deputy and a senator in the Romanian Parliament. He even served as a vice-president and president of the Senate of Romania.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1950, Daniel Ciugureanu was arrested by the authorities in Romania. He passed away shortly after.
Because his exact burial place is not known, a cross was placed at the Sighet Cemetery in 1993 to remember him. His son, Gheorghe Ciugureanu, also had a special memorial (called a cenotaph) built for him near Bucharest.
