Socialist Republic of Romania facts for kids
From 1947 to 1989, Romania was a country with a socialist government. This means the government had a lot of control over the economy and people's lives. From 1947 to 1965, it was known as the Romanian People's Republic (or RPR).
In 1965, a new leader named Nicolae Ceaușescu came to power. He took over after the previous leader, Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, passed away. To show this change, the country's name was updated to the Socialist Republic of Romania.
After many years, in 1989, there was a big change. People in Romania wanted a different kind of government. There was a revolution where many people protested. The secret police, called Securitate, used force against the protesters. However, some parts of the regular army joined the people protesting. Sadly, over 1,000 people lost their lives during these events. Ceaușescu and his wife were arrested, and their time in power ended suddenly on December 25, 1989. After these events, Ion Iliescu became the new president of Romania.
