Daniel Minter is an amazing African-American artist born in 1961 in Ellaville, Georgia. He creates art in many ways, like painting, sculpting, and drawing pictures for books. He also makes art for public spaces and uses different materials together, which is called assemblage.

Daniel Minter's Education
Daniel Minter studied art at the Art Institute of Atlanta. He earned an A.A. degree there. Later, in 2019, he received a special award called an Honorary Doctorate of Arts. This award came from the Maine College of Art.
What Daniel Minter Does
Early in his career, Daniel Minter worked as a graphic designer. This means he created visual designs for different projects.
Illustrating Children's Books
Minter has drawn pictures for many children's books. He has illustrated twelve books in total. Two of these books won important awards.
- Ellen's Broom won a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor in 2013.
- Going Down Home with Daddy was a 2020 Caldecott Honor recipient.
Both of these award-winning books were written by Kelly Starling Lyons.
Designing Stamps
Daniel Minter also designed two special stamps for the United States Postal Service. These stamps celebrate Kwanzaa. One stamp was released in 2004, and the other in 2011.
His Work Today
Today, Daniel Minter lives in Portland, Maine. He continues to create new art there. He is also a board member of The Underground Railroad. This group helps people learn about the historical network that helped enslaved people find freedom. Minter's art has been shown in many exhibits in Portland. You can also see his designs in the official logos for The Underground Railroad and the Maine Interfaith Youth Alliance.
