History of Ellaville
From Pond Town to Ellaville
The story of Ellaville began with an older town called Pond Town. It was started in 1812. Pond Town was located along a stagecoach route. This area was once part of the lands belonging to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, a group of Native American people.
In 1821, after a special agreement called the Treaty of Indian Springs, the land became part of the state of Georgia. Pond Town grew into a busy place. It was known for horse racing and making whiskey. For a short time in 1826, it was even the temporary county seat for Lee County, Georgia.
Later, in 1831, the area became part of Sumter County, Georgia. But by 1840, many families moved away to Mississippi. This caused Pond Town to become less populated.
Founding of Ellaville
Ellaville was officially founded in 1857. It was chosen as the new county seat for the recently created Schley County. Two years later, in 1859, it became an official town. Many families from old Pond Town moved their homes about half a mile to the new Ellaville. In August 1859, the post office also moved and changed its name from Pond Town to Ellaville.
