Daniel O'Carroll facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Daniel O'Carroll (who lived until 1750) was an officer in the British Army. He was known for using the title of a baronet, which is a special rank, like a knight, that can sometimes be passed down in a family.

Daniel O'Carroll was the son of John O'Carroll from County Galway, Ireland. His mother was Margaret Crean.

Daniel O'Carroll's Early Life and Military Career

Daniel O'Carroll started his military career as a captain in a regiment that fought for Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession. This was a big war where Spain was fighting against Britain and its allies.

Later, he was honored by the King of Spain and became a knight of the Order of Santiago. This was a very important military award for his brave actions during the war. However, he later left the Spanish service.

After leaving Spain, he received a special recognition from Queen Anne of Great Britain, which gave him the rank of knighthood.

Rising Through the Ranks

Daniel O'Carroll continued to advance in the British Army. In 1709, he became a lieutenant-colonel in a cavalry regiment (a group of soldiers who fight on horseback). By 1710, he was promoted to colonel.

His regiment was later disbanded in 1711. Around this time, he began to use the title of a baronet. It's interesting because there isn't an official record of him being given this title by the King or Queen. However, many people, including important writers of the time, referred to him as a baronet from Great Britain.

He continued to be promoted in the army:

  • In 1735, he became a brigadier-general.
  • In 1739, he was promoted to major-general.
  • By 1742, he reached the high rank of lieutenant-general.

Family Life

Around 1712, Daniel O'Carroll married Elizabeth Jervoise. She was the eldest daughter of Thomas Jervoise from Hampshire. Daniel and Elizabeth had two sons, named Daniel and John.

Elizabeth O'Carroll passed away in London in 1728. Daniel O'Carroll himself died on November 4, 1750, and was buried in the same place as his wife.

The O'Carroll Baronetcy After Daniel

After Daniel O'Carroll's death, his eldest son, also named Daniel, took on the title of baronet. This younger Daniel was born around 1717 and also became a captain in the army in 1752. He died in 1758 without any sons.

Then, the title was adopted by his younger brother, John O'Carroll. John was born in 1722. He was alive in 1777, but the exact date of his death is not known.

John's son, also named John, became a British diplomat in Saxe-Weimar (a place in Germany). He died in 1818. His two sons, Jervoise and John, then successively used the baronet title. Neither of them is known to have married or had children. Because of this, the O'Carroll baronetcy is thought to have ended or become inactive.
