Daniela De Silva facts for kids
Daniela De Silva is an Italian mathematician. She is known for her important work with partial differential equations. These are special math problems that help describe how things change over time or space. She teaches mathematics at Barnard College and Columbia University.
Her Education and Career
Daniela De Silva studied mathematics at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy. She earned her first degree there in 1997.
Later, she moved to the United States to continue her studies. She earned her advanced degree (a doctorate) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2005. Her main project for this degree was about how to find and understand solutions to a specific type of math problem. Her professor, David Jerison, helped her with this work.
After finishing her studies, she did more research at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. She also taught as an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University. In 2007, she joined the faculty at Barnard College and Columbia University, where she teaches today.
Awards and Honors
In 2016, Daniela De Silva won the Sadosky Prize from the Association for Women in Mathematics. This award recognized her important discoveries in solving complex math problems, especially those involving how things change and interact.
Barnard College honored her again in 2018. They gave her the Tow Professorship for Distinguished Scholars and Practitioners. This special title is given to professors who are excellent teachers and researchers.
