Early Success and First Book
Danielle Evans's first collection of short stories was called Before You ... Your Own Fool Self. This book won the 2011 PEN/Robert Bingham Prize. This award is given to authors for their first book of fiction.
The title of her book was inspired by a line from a poem. The poem is "The Bridge Poem" by Kate Rushin. It was in Rushin's book The Black Back-Ups, published in 1993. A reviewer for The New York Times, Lydia Peelle, said Evans's stories felt like a fun, all-night chat with a cool friend.
