History of the Daniels County Courthouse
The Daniels County Courthouse has an interesting past. It wasn't always a courthouse!
From Hotel to Courthouse
The building was first built in 1913. This was the same year Scobey town moved to its current spot. The new location was along the Great Northern Railway line. When it was first built, the building was a hotel. It was the biggest building in Scobey at that time. It had a special design called a "false front." This made the building look taller and grander than it actually was.
Becoming the County Seat
In 1920, Daniels County was officially created. The new county needed a place for its government offices. So, the county decided to buy the large hotel. They turned it into their courthouse. This is how the building became the Daniels County Courthouse.
A Historic Landmark
The Daniels County Courthouse is recognized as a special place. On May 4, 1995, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings and sites that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the building for future generations.
