Danny Donnelly is a politician from Northern Ireland. He is a member of the Alliance Party. Since May 2022, he has been a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the East Antrim area. This means he helps make laws and decisions for Northern Ireland.
Danny Donnelly's Political Journey
Starting in Politics (2011-2022)
Danny Donnelly began his political journey with the Green Party NI. He first ran in local elections in 2011 for Larne Borough Council. Later, he joined the Alliance Party.
He then ran for the new Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in 2014. He was an Alliance candidate but was not elected that time.
Donnelly also ran for the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2016 and 2017. He was not elected in these attempts either.
In May 2019, he ran again for the Mid and East Antrim District Council. This time, he was elected for the Larne Lough District. He received many votes and was one of the top candidates.
Later in 2019, Donnelly became the Alliance Party candidate for East Antrim in the UK general election. He helped increase the Alliance Party's votes in that area. He came in second place, reducing the lead of the winning politician, Sammy Wilson.
Serving as an MLA (2022-Present)
Danny Donnelly was elected as an MLA for East Antrim in the 2022 Assembly election. He won the fifth seat for the Alliance Party. This meant his party gained a seat from the UUP. He was elected alongside his fellow party member, Stewart Dickson.
In the 2024 general election, Donnelly again ran for the UK Parliament. He further reduced the winning politician's lead in East Antrim.
