The Story of Danzig, North Dakota

How Danzig Began

Danzig got its name from a city in Prussia, which is now called Gdańsk in Poland. It was a common practice for new settlements in America to be named after places in Europe.

The Post Office Years

A post office is often the heart of a small community. Danzig had its first post office open in 1898. But it didn't last long, closing in 1903. This was because the area wasn't growing much.

However, Danzig got a second chance! In 1911, the post office reopened. It stayed open for many years, until 1955. During this time, Danzig had a small population, reaching about 100 people at its busiest.

What Happened to Danzig?

After the post office closed in 1955, most people moved away. Today, Danzig is no longer a community. The land where the town once stood is now private property. What used to be the main street now leads to a farmer's driveway. It's a reminder of how small towns can change over time.
