Daphne's Greek Cafe, also known as Daphne's California Greek, is a restaurant chain. It serves delicious Greek-style food in California. The restaurants are "fast-casual," meaning you get your food quickly. It's often a step up from traditional fast food. The name "Daphne's" comes from a famous story in ancient Greek myths. In this myth, Daphne was a beautiful nymph.
Daphne's has received praise for its food. In 2006, Fast Casual magazine listed Daphne's as one of the top restaurant chains. They called it a "trendsetter" in the fast-casual world. The magazine also mentioned that Daphne's had some of the best gyros. In 2008, San Diego Magazine voted Daphne's as the "Best Greek" restaurant.

How Daphne's Started
Daphne's Greek Cafe was founded by George Katakalidis in 1991. It quickly grew into a popular chain. By 2010, Daphne's had about 60 locations. These restaurants were spread across Arizona and California.
Changes and New Ownership
In January 2010, the company faced some financial challenges. An investor group, led by William Trefethen, bought Daphne's. In 2011, the restaurant chain changed its name. It became Daphne's California Greek. This new name came with a new idea. The restaurants started focusing on a mix of California and Greek foods. They emphasized fresh ingredients.
The William Trefethen group continued to update the brand for about four years. Then, a new investment group from Chicago, called Victory Park Capital, bought the company.
Where Daphne's Is Today
In early 2024, many Daphne's locations closed. This included all restaurants in Orange County and San Diego County. As of April 2024, only six locations remain open. Five of these are in Southern California. One is in the Sacramento area. The remaining locations are in Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Redondo Beach, Temecula, Ontario, and Roseville.
