Friends and Fellow Artists
Daphne Charlton had many talented friends at the Slade School. One of her classmates was Mary Adshead, who was also a painter. Mary Adshead even painted a well-known picture of Daphne in 1935.
Daphne also knew the famous artist Stanley Spencer. He painted several portraits of Daphne. One famous painting from 1940, called Daphne, shows her wearing a stylish hat. Spencer had bought this hat especially for her to wear during the painting sessions. Another portrait of Daphne by Spencer, painted the next year, looked quite different. Daphne also painted Stanley Spencer. Her painting showed him looking sad, resting against a pillow.
