Meet Daphne Trimble
Daphne Trimble was born in July 1953. She has had an interesting career, working in both education and politics. She is also known as Baroness Trimble because her husband, David Trimble, was given a special title and became a Lord.
Her Early Life and Family
Daphne studied Law at Queen's University Belfast. After finishing her studies, she married her former university lecturer, David Trimble, in August 1978. David Trimble later became a very important political leader.
In June 2006, David Trimble was given the title of Lord and became a member of the House of Lords. This meant that Daphne also received a special title and became known as Lady Trimble, or Baroness Trimble. They had two sons and two daughters together: Richard, Victoria, Nicholas, and Sarah.
Daphne has also worked in schools in the Armagh area, helping young people learn.
Working for Northern Ireland
Daphne Trimble has worked to help people in Northern Ireland. She was a member of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. This group works to make sure everyone is treated fairly.
Later, in 2008, she became a part-time Commissioner for the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC). This commission helps protect people's rights. During her time there, she did not agree with some ideas for a new Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland. A Bill of Rights is a list of important freedoms and protections for citizens.
Political Involvement
In 2010, Daphne Trimble decided to try and become a Member of Parliament. She resigned from the Human Rights Commission to run in the UK general election that May. She ran for the Ulster Conservatives and Unionists party in the Lagan Valley area, but she was not elected.
In August 2022, she publicly supported Liz Truss to become the leader of the Conservative Party.
In March 2023, Daphne Trimble was given an important role. She was appointed as the Honorary President of the Ulster Unionist Party. This is a special title that shows her long-standing connection and support for the party.
