Darinka Dentcheva is a Bulgarian-American mathematician. She is known for her important work in mathematical optimization. This field helps people make the best decisions when facing many choices or uncertainties. She has made big contributions to areas like stochastic programming and risk-averse optimization. These are ways to solve problems where things are uncertain or risky.

Her Journey in Education and Work

Darinka Dentcheva was born in Bulgaria. She loved math and studied hard.

Early Studies in Germany

She earned her first advanced degree (MsC) in mathematics in 1981. Later, in 1989, she received her PhD in mathematics. Both of these degrees were from Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany. In 2006, she completed another special degree called Habilitation from the same university. This degree showed her deep knowledge in a field called set-valued analysis, which is about working with groups of numbers or objects.

Working as a Mathematician

From 1982 to 1994, Darinka Dentcheva worked at the Institute of Mathematics in Sofia, Bulgaria. She then moved to the United States.

In 1997, she visited Rutgers University to work on research. From 1999 to 2000, she was a visiting professor at Lehigh University. Since 2000, Professor Dentcheva has been a professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Stevens Institute of Technology. She even served as the Chair of the Faculty Senate there from 2023 to 2024. This means she helped lead the professors at the university.

What She is Known For

Professor Dentcheva has developed new ideas and methods in mathematics.

Solving Complex Problems

She created a theory called "Steiner selections of multifunctions." She also worked with another mathematician, Andrzej Ruszczyński, to develop the theory of stochastic dominance constraints. This helps in making choices when you want to be sure one option is better than another, even with uncertainty. She also helped with the theory of "unit commitment" in power systems, which is about deciding how to best use power plants to provide electricity.

Professor Dentcheva has written two books and more than 70 research papers. These papers share her new mathematical discoveries with other scientists around the world.
