Her Education and Career
Darinka Dentcheva was born in Bulgaria. She studied mathematics at Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany. She earned her master's degree there in 1981 and her PhD in 1989. In 2006, she received a special advanced degree called Habilitation from the same university. This degree showed her deep understanding of a field called "set-valued analysis," which involves studying groups of numbers or objects.
From 1982 to 1994, Dentcheva worked at the Institute of Mathematics in Sofia, Bulgaria. Later, she visited Rutgers University and was a visiting professor at Lehigh University. Since 2000, Professor Dentcheva has been teaching at Stevens Institute of Technology. She is a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences there. In 2023-2024, she was even the Chair of the Faculty Senate, which means she led the group of professors at the university.
Her Important Work
Professor Dentcheva has made big contributions to mathematics. She helped create the theory of Steiner selections of multifunctions. This is a way to pick the best options from many possibilities. She also worked with Andrzej Piotr Ruszczyński to develop the theory of stochastic dominance constraints. This helps in making choices when you want to be sure one option is better than another, especially when things are uncertain.
She also contributed to understanding how to best manage power systems, like deciding which power plants to turn on or off. This work was done with Werner Römisch.
Darinka Dentcheva has written two books and more than 70 research papers. Her work helps scientists and engineers make better decisions in many different fields.
