Dario Hübner (born 28 April 1967) is an Italian former professional footballer. He played as a forward, which means he was a player who focused on scoring goals. Dario was known for being great at finding the back of the net. He could score with both his head and his feet. He was also very good at taking penalty kicks.
Dario Hübner scored over 300 goals during his career. He started playing in lower football divisions and only reached the top leagues later in his career. He became the oldest player to win the Serie A top scorer award. He achieved this during the 2001–02 Serie A season when he was 35 years old. This record was later broken by another player, Luca Toni, in 2015.
Playing Career
Dario Hübner was born in Muggia, Italy. He began his football journey in 1987–88 with Pievigina. At that time, they played in a league called Interregionale. He scored ten goals in his first season.
After that, he played for Pergocrema in 1988–89. Then he moved to Fano from 1989 to 1992, playing in Serie C. From 1992 to 1997, he played for Cesena in Serie B.
Reaching Serie A
In 1997, Cesena was moved down to Serie C. Dario then joined Brescia, which had just been promoted to Serie A. This was a big step for him, as he was already in his thirties when he made his debut in Italy's top football league.
In his very first Serie A game, he scored a goal against Inter at the San Siro Stadium. His teammate Andrea Pirlo helped him with the assist. In his second game, he scored three goals against Sampdoria! Even though he scored 16 goals that season, Brescia was moved down to Serie B the next year.
Dario later became the team's captain and their main penalty taker. He helped Brescia get back into Serie A. He scored 21 goals during the 1999–2000 Serie B season to help them achieve this.
During the 2000–01 season, Dario played alongside the famous attacking midfielder Roberto Baggio. Baggio was the team's new captain. Under coach Carlo Mazzone, Dario was very successful. He scored 17 goals, helping the club qualify for the 2001 UEFA Intertoto Cup.
Top Scorer Achievements
In 2001, Dario joined Piacenza, another team that had just been promoted to Serie A. At Piacenza, Dario often competed for the title of top scorer in Serie A. He finished first, tied with David Trezeguet, in the 2001–02 season. He scored 24 goals at 35 years old. The next season, 2002–03, he was 7th with 14 goals.
Dario Hübner is one of only two players, along with Igor Protti, to have won the top scoring titles in Serie A, Serie B, and Serie C1. He won the Serie B top scorer title in the 1995–96 season with Cesena, scoring 22 goals. He also won the Serie C1 top scorer title in 1991–92 with Fano, scoring 14 goals. He is still Piacenza's all-time top scorer in Serie A.
After Piacenza, he played for Ancona and Perugia in Serie A during the 2003–04 Serie A season. He then played for Mantova in Serie C1 from 2004 to 2005.
In September 2005, he left professional football. He then played for Chiari in Serie D. Two months later, he joined Rodengo Saiano, another Serie D club. From 2006 to 2009, he played for Orsa Corte Franca. He also played for Castel Mella (2009–10) and Cavenago (2010–11) before he retired. After retiring, he started working as a coach.
Personal Life
Dario Hübner has German heritage from his father's side of the family. His grandfather was from Frankfurt, Germany, but he later moved to Trieste, Italy. Even though his grandfather was German, Dario Hübner does not speak the German language very well.
He was given the nickname Bisonte, which means "Bison" in Italian.
In 2015, Dario appeared in a music video called "L'estate di Hubner" by a band named Toromeccanica. He was also mentioned in a song called "Hübner" in 2018 by the singer-songwriter Calcutta.
