Darnell Martin, born on January 7, 1964, is an American director and writer. She creates movies and TV shows. She is also a film producer.

Early Life and Education
Darnell Martin grew up in the Bronx, New York. Her mom was a dancer, and her dad was a lawyer.
She studied at Sarah Lawrence College and New York University Film School. Before becoming a director, she worked in film labs. She also made music videos and short films. She even wrote the first version of her movie I Like It Like That.
What Movies and TV Shows Has Darnell Martin Directed?
In 1992, Darnell Martin made a short film called Suspect. It looked at how young Black people were sometimes treated unfairly. The film was praised at a special event for young Black filmmakers.
After Suspect, Martin worked as an assistant camera operator. She helped on a documentary called Cousin Bobby.
Directing Feature Films
In 1994, Martin directed I Like It Like That. This movie was a comedy-drama. It was about a young woman trying to manage her family and her life. Critics liked the film, but it did not earn much money. In 2001, she directed another movie called Prison Song.
In 2008, Martin wrote and directed Cadillac Records. This musical-drama film was about Leonard Chess. He founded Chess Records, a famous music label. The movie showed the early days of R&B and rock 'n' roll music.
