Dart, Ohio facts for kids
Dart is a small, quiet place in Washington County, Ohio. It's called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and people living together, but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Dart is located in the eastern part of the United States.
What's the Story Behind Dart?
How Did Dart Get Its Name?
The community of Dart got its name in a unique way. A post office opened there in 1905. People living in the area were trying to decide on a name for their community. The story goes that they saw a bird flying very fast, "like a dart." This quick movement inspired them to name their new post office, and then the community, Dart. The post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1984.
What Happened to Lawrence Elementary School?
For a long time, Dart was home to Lawrence Elementary School. This school was part of the Frontier Local School District. It was an important place for kids in the area to learn.
However, over the years, fewer and fewer students lived in the Dart area. Because of this, the number of students attending Lawrence Elementary School became very low. Sadly, due to this low enrollment, the school had to close in 2014.
In the past, this school building was even bigger. It used to be the main high school for the district. But after Frontier High School was built, and as the population in the surrounding area decreased, Lawrence Elementary became smaller and less important within the school district.
