Darwinia helichrysoides is a special plant found only in Western Australia. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family, which includes many well-known plants like eucalyptus trees. This unique shrub is sometimes called a "mountain bell" because of its bell-shaped flowers.
What is Darwinia helichrysoides?
This plant is a small shrub. It usually grows to be about 0.2 to 0.5 meters tall. That's like knee-high to waist-high for most kids! It has a slim, upright shape.
What Does It Look Like?
Darwinia helichrysoides puts on a beautiful show of flowers. These flowers are a mix of red and green colors. They bloom during the spring and early summer months. You can see them between August and November.
Where Does It Grow?
This plant is endemic to a small part of Western Australia. This means it grows naturally only in this specific area. It lives in the uplands between two towns, Coorow and Dandaragan. This area is where two different land regions meet: the Geraldton Sandplain and the Swan Coastal Plain. The plant prefers to grow in gravelly soils that contain laterite.
