Early Life and Education
Daun Sessoms Hester grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, in an area called Five Points. She went to Norview High School. After high school, she continued her education. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Virginia State University in 1978. Later, in 1990, she received a Master of Arts degree in education and human development from George Washington University. For 22 years, Ms. Hester worked as a teacher for Norfolk Public Schools.
Serving Her Community: City Council and Vice Mayor
Ms. Hester first became involved in local government in 1996. She was elected to the Norfolk, Virginia City Council, representing a part of the city called Superward 7. The City Council makes important decisions for the city. In 2004, her fellow council members chose her to be the vice mayor. She held this important leadership role until 2008.
In 2010, Ms. Hester ran for mayor of Norfolk. She did not win that election. After the election, she decided to resign from her City Council seat.
From Local to State: Virginia House of Delegates
In 2012, there was an opening in the Virginia House of Delegates. This is a group of lawmakers who create laws for the state of Virginia. A special election was held to fill the open seat in the 89th district. Daun Sessoms Hester ran as a member of the Democratic Party.
On December 18, 2012, Ms. Hester won the special election. This meant she became a state delegate, representing her district in the Virginia House of Delegates. She served in this role until January 2018. After her time as a delegate, she became the Treasurer for the city of Norfolk in 2018. The Treasurer manages the city's money.
