About Dave Hlubek
Growing Up
David Lawrence Hlubek was born in Jacksonville, Florida. When he was five years old, his family moved to Oahu, Hawaii. He went to Waikiki Elementary School there.
Later, his family moved several times within California. They lived in Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and San Jose. In 1965, they moved back to Jacksonville, Florida. Dave attended Forrest High School in Jacksonville.
Starting Molly Hatchet
Dave Hlubek started the band Molly Hatchet in 1971. He first played in a band called Mind Garden with his friend Tim Lindsey. Other members joined Molly Hatchet later. Danny Joe Brown became the vocalist in 1974. Guitarist Steve Holland, bassist Banner Thomas, and Duane Roland joined in 1974. Bruce Crump joined in 1976.
Dave was the band's first singer. He also wrote most of their songs. One of their most famous songs is "Flirtin' with Disaster".
A Songwriter's Journey
Molly Hatchet signed a record deal with Epic Records. They got help from Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist Ronnie Van Zant. He was supposed to produce their first album. Sadly, he died in a plane crash in 1977.
Many people called Molly Hatchet a "Southern Rock" band. Dave said this was because of where they came from. He thought Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot were more like heavy metal bands from the South. He also mentioned that Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crash opened doors for Molly Hatchet.
New Musical Adventures
In 1987, Dave Hlubek left Molly Hatchet. He then started working on new music projects. He formed bands like Hlubek & Friends and Southern Jam Band. He also created the Southern Rock Legends. This group included former members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot.
Dave also worked with other bands. He joined the Dixie Allstars, which later became the Southern Rock Allstars. He co-founded this band with Blackfoot drummer Jakson Spires. In 2003, he teamed up with Mike Estes from Lynyrd Skynyrd. They formed a band called Skinny Molly.
Back with Molly Hatchet
In January 2005, Dave Hlubek rejoined Molly Hatchet. Due to health reasons, he toured and flew less often. He continued to record and play music when he could. Dave Hlubek was still an active member of the band until he passed away on September 2, 2017.
