Dave Salmoni was born on September 4, 1975. His mom was a figure skating coach, and his dad was a scientist. They helped him love nature from a young age. Dave studied zoology at Laurentian University in Ontario. For his college project, he tracked how black bears hibernate. He also learned how to safely handle wildlife. He helped move elk and count deer for the Ministry of Natural Resources.

In 1998, Dave started learning to train animals at Bowmanville Zoological Park. In 2000, he moved to South Africa. There, he worked on a special project to help Bengal tigers live in the wild. In 1999, Dave was hurt by a large African lion named Bongo. This experience later inspired him to make a TV show called After the Attack.
