David Azulai (Hebrew: דוד אזולאי) was an Israeli politician. He was born on May 5, 1954, and passed away on October 30, 2018. For over 20 years, from 1996 to 2018, he served as a member of the Knesset. The Knesset is like Israel's parliament, where laws are made. He was part of the Shas political party. From 2015 until his death, he also served as the Minister of Religious Services. This role meant he was in charge of government services related to religion in Israel.
About David Azulai
David Azulai was born in a city called Meknes in Morocco. When he was nine years old, in 1963, his family moved to Israel. This move is called aliyah.
Before becoming a politician, David Azulai worked in education. From 1973 to 1993, he was a teacher. He also served as a vice principal, helping to lead schools.
His Work in Politics
David Azulai started his political journey in local government. From 1978 to 1993, he was a member of the local council in Acre. He also worked on different committees within the city's government.
In 1993, he was elected to the Nahal Iron Regional Council. Here, he first served as the deputy mayor. Later, he became the mayor of the council.
He left his role as mayor when he was elected to the Knesset in 1996. The Knesset is Israel's main law-making body. In the Knesset, he held important positions. From 2000 to 2001, he was the Chairman of the Internal Affairs and Environment Committee. This committee deals with things like public safety and protecting nature.
From 2001 to 2003, he served as the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. In this job, he helped the main minister manage domestic issues. He was also asked to lead a special group. This group looked into the status of the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel.
After the 2015 elections, David Azulai was given a big role. He was appointed the Minister of Religious Services. This meant he was responsible for all government services related to religious matters.
In March 2018, David Azulai had to leave his seat in the Knesset. He did this because he was ill. He used a special rule called the Norwegian Law. This law allows a minister to temporarily step down from their Knesset seat. This way, someone else can take their place while they are still a minister. His son, Yinon Azulai, took his place in the Knesset.
His Passing
David Azulai passed away on October 30, 2018. He had been battling cancer for a long time. This illness was why he had to leave the Knesset earlier that year. His son, Yinon, who took his place in the Knesset, is now considered a possible candidate to become the next Minister of Religious Services.
