Kids Encyclopedia Facts

David Bethune, also known as Beaton, was an important Scottish landowner and politician from Fife. He lived a long time ago, from about 1605 to 1660.

Early Life and Family

David Bethune was born around 1605. It's thought he might have been born at his family's castle, Creich. He was the oldest son of David Bethune, 7th of Creich, and his mother, Eupham Forbes.

He had two sisters. His sister Ann Bethune married Sir John Moncreiff. His other sister, Elizabeth Bethune, married William Fullarton and later Alexander Erskine.

His Work as a Politician

Around 1628, David Bethune took over his father's lands. This was an important role for a landowner back then.

He was chosen to be a Shire Commissioner for Fife in the Parliament of Scotland. This meant he represented his area in the Scottish government. He served in Parliament from 1644 to 1647 and again from 1648 to 1651. During these times, he was also part of the Committee for War, which helped make decisions about military matters.

David Bethune passed away on March 4, 1660, in a place called Dunbog. He did not have any children. After he died, his younger brother, William Bethune, 9th of Creich, became the next head of the family.

His Marriages

David Bethune was married twice. Around 1630, he married Eupham Graham. Sadly, they did not have any children who lived.

Later, on December 31, 1639, he married Margaret Cunningham. Her father was William Cunningham, 8th Earl of Glencairn. David and Margaret also did not have any children. After David passed away, Margaret married again to John Chisholm.
