David Deutsch's Early Career in Advertising
Before starting his own company, David Deutsch was already a very experienced person in the advertising industry. He worked for a big advertising firm called McCann Erickson for 13 years. After that, he moved to another well-known agency, Ogilvy & Mather, where he was the creative director for four years. This meant he was in charge of the ideas and designs for advertisements.
Starting His Own Advertising Company
In 1969, David Deutsch decided to open his own advertising agency, David Deutsch Associates, in New York City. His very first important client was Oneida Limited, a company that designs and sells tableware and cutlery.
At first, his agency was a "boutique" firm, meaning it was smaller and focused mainly on creative ideas for ads. But under David Deutsch's leadership, it grew into a "full-service" agency. This means it handled all parts of advertising, from creating ideas to placing ads in different places. The company became well-known for its high-quality print advertising, which are ads found in magazines or newspapers.
By 1983, David Deutsch's company worked with many famous brands, including Pontiac cars. Many of their clients were "prestige brands," which are high-end or luxury products like Letts of London (known for diaries) and Crouch Fitzgerald (known for leather goods).
David Deutsch believed strongly in hard work. He once said that he would work very long hours to make sure he kept his promises to clients. His son, Donny Deutsch, joined the company in 1983.
Passing the Business to His Son
In 1989, David Deutsch gave control of his advertising agency to his son, Donny. Donny Deutsch then changed the company's name to Deutsch Inc., which is what it's called today.
That same year, Donny Deutsch launched a very special ad campaign for IKEA, a popular furniture store. This campaign was groundbreaking because it showed different kinds of families, which was new for TV commercials at the time. One ad, called Dining Room, helped make IKEA a very well-known company to people in North America.
Under Donny Deutsch, the company grew a lot. He opened new offices in cities like Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The amount of money the agency earned from clients, called "billing," increased from $70 million in 1989 to $800 million by 1998! In 2000, Deutsch Inc. was sold to a larger company called Interpublic Group.
Retirement and Art Career
David Deutsch continued to work in advertising for four years after his son took over the daily operations of the company. He officially retired from the advertising world in 1993.
After retiring, David Deutsch followed his passion for fine arts. He became an artist and had many solo art shows and exhibitions in Florida and New York. His artwork won awards from judges at shows held in several museums, including the Cornell Fine Arts Museum and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. His art was also displayed in many art galleries.
