David E. Warford (1866−1942) was an Arizona cowboy who lived a life full of adventure. He was born in Troy, New York. He became famous for serving with a special group of soldiers called the Rough Riders. Later, he worked as a United States Forest Ranger and an Arizona Ranger. David Warford was also known for having many tattoos.

David E. Warford: A Life of Adventure

David E. Warford was born in 1866. He grew up to become a cowboy in Arizona. Cowboys were skilled riders who worked with cattle. They spent a lot of time outdoors. This early life likely prepared him for his future roles.

Serving with the Rough Riders

In 1898, David Warford joined the Rough Riders. This was a volunteer cavalry regiment. They fought in the Spanish–American War. The Rough Riders were led by Theodore Roosevelt. They were a famous group of soldiers.

Warford was part of B Company. They served in Cuba. In June 1898, he was injured during the Battle of Las Guasimas. He was then taken to a hospital ship for care. This showed his bravery in battle.

From Ranger to Ranger

After his military service, David Warford continued to serve his country. In 1901, he became a United States Forest Ranger. Forest Rangers help protect forests and natural resources. They work to prevent fires and manage public lands.

Two years later, in 1903, Warford joined the Arizona Rangers. This was a law enforcement agency. They helped keep peace and order in Arizona. Being an Arizona Ranger was a tough job. It required courage and skill.

Later Life and Legacy

David Warford was known for his many tattoos. These tattoos covered much of his body. They went from his neck all the way to his ankles. This was quite unusual for his time.

In 1915, he lived at the Sawtelle Veterans Home. This home provided care for soldiers who had served their country. It was a place where veterans could live and receive support. David E. Warford passed away in 1942. He was buried at the Sawtelle Soldiers' Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. His life showed a spirit of adventure and service.
