David Ehrenstein (born February 18, 1947) is an American critic. He mostly writes about movies, especially focusing on how gay issues are shown in films.

Life and Career

David Ehrenstein was born in New York City. He went to the High School of Music and Art. Later, he attended Pace College, which is now called Pace University. Today, he lives in Los Angeles.

His writing career began in 1965. He started with an interview with the famous artist Andy Warhol. This interview was published in Film Culture magazine in 1966. Ehrenstein continued to write for Film Culture until 1983. In the 1960s, he also wrote for December and the Village Voice.

In 1976, he moved to Los Angeles with his partner Bill Reed. There, he began working as a film critic and journalist. He wrote for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. During this time, he also contributed to Film Comment and Film Quarterly.

In 1982, he worked with Bill Reed on a book called Rock On Film. He kept writing for many different publications. These included the San Francisco Examiner, Rolling Stone, Cahiers du Cinéma, and Arts. He also wrote for the Los Angeles Reader, Enclitic, and Wide Angle. Later, he moved from the Herald-Examiner to Daily Variety. After that, he wrote for The Advocate. He also wrote a book called Film: The Front Line - 1984. This book looked at experimental and independent films. He has also written for Sight and Sound magazine.

In 1987, Ehrenstein helped with a special exhibition. It was called "Hollywood and History" and showed movie costumes. This exhibition was at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 1992, he published The Scorsese Picture: The Art and Life of Martin Scorsese. This book was about the famous director Martin Scorsese. In 1998, he published Open Secret: Gay Hollywood 1927-1997.

Ehrenstein has appeared on The E! True Hollywood Story many times. He was featured in profiles about Rock Hudson, Sonny Bono, and Bob Guccione. He has also written about the movie Brokeback Mountain for LA Weekly. His homepage and blog also share his thoughts and humor.
