David Forsyth Main (born in 1831 – died on 27 July 1880) was an important person in New Zealand's history. He was a member of parliament (MP) in the Otago region during the 1800s. An MP is someone chosen by voters to represent them in the country's main law-making group.

David Forsyth Main was born in 1831. He became a lawyer, which is called a barrister. Barristers are special lawyers who represent people in court. He lived and worked in New Zealand during the 19th century. He passed away in Dunedin when he was 48 years old.
His Early Political Journey
In 1866, David Forsyth Main decided to run for parliament. He was one of three people trying to become the MP for the Gold Field Towns area. This area is called an electorate, which is like a special voting district. He came in second place in that election, losing by a small amount to another candidate named James Benn Bradshaw.
Representing Port Chalmers
Even though he didn't win in 1866, David Forsyth Main soon got another chance. In 1867, he became the MP for the Port Chalmers area. He served in parliament for three years, from 1867 until 1870. After this time, he decided to retire from politics.
