David Gaines (basketball) facts for kids
David "Smokey" Gaines (born February 27, 1942 – died September 5, 2020) was an American basketball player and coach. He was known for his skills on the court and for leading college teams.
Smokey Gaines played professional basketball for a short time with the Kentucky Colonels. He also played for the famous Harlem Globetrotters, a team known for their amazing tricks and entertainment.
After his playing days, Gaines became a successful coach. He was the head coach for the Detroit Mercy basketball team. Later, he coached the San Diego State Aztecs. He helped guide many young athletes during his coaching career.
Smokey Gaines passed away on September 5, 2020, at the age of 78.
