David Henry Stone (born 1812, died February 26, 1890) was an important figure in London. His family owned a lot of land near Lewes for hundreds of years. He was the nephew of Thomas Farncomb, who was the Lord Mayor of London in 1849. David Stone went to St Olave's Grammar School in Southwark. He worked as a lawyer (called a solicitor and attorney) from 1839 until 1864.

David Henry Stone was a key person in the City of London Corporation. This is the local government for the historic heart of London. He first joined them in 1840. At that time, he became an Under-Sheriff for his uncle, Alderman Farncombe.

Early Life and Career

David Stone started his career as a lawyer. He helped people with legal matters. This work prepared him for his later roles in public service. He learned a lot about rules and how the city worked.

Serving the City of London

David Stone became an Alderman for the area called Bassishaw. He held this important position from 1864 until his death in 1890. An Alderman is a senior member of the City of London Corporation. They help make decisions for the city.

Important Roles in London

In 1867, David Stone was chosen as a Sheriff of London. Sheriffs are important officials who help with law and order. Later, in 1874, he was elected to the highest position: Lord Mayor of London. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London Corporation. It is a very old and respected role.

David Stone also held many other important jobs. He was the Treasurer for St. Thomas' Hospital from 1877 to 1890. He also managed money for the Honourable Artillery Company from 1880 to 1890. He was part of the Metropolitan Board of Works for several years. This board helped manage public works in London. He was also the last leader of Clifford's Inn, a historic legal society.

From 1863, David Stone lived in a house called 'Fairwood'. It was located on Sydenham Hill in Sydenham. This was a wealthy area south of the city.
