David I (Georgian: დავით I) was a Georgian prince who lived a long time ago. He was part of the important Bagratid family. He ruled over parts of a region called Tao-Klarjeti.

David I held a special title called mampali. He ruled in areas like Adjara and Nigali starting in 889. Later, from 900, he also ruled in Klarjeti. He continued to rule until he decided to step down in 943.

Who Was Prince David I?

David I was the oldest son of Sumbat I. His father, Sumbat I, was the person who started the Klarjeti branch of the Bagratid family. This family was very important in Georgia.

His Early Rule and Lands

When David's father, Sumbat, passed away in 889, David's younger brother, Bagrat I, became the ruler of Klarjeti. Klarjeti was a very important area. At first, David only got to rule over less important lands. These lands were Adjara and Nigali.

Gaining More Power

Things changed for David in 900. His brother, Bagrat I, passed away that year. After Bagrat's death, David was able to take control of Klarjeti. Klarjeti included an important fortress and a busy trading town called Artanuji. This made David a much more powerful ruler.

Life as a Monk

David I ruled for many years. In 943, he decided to give up his power. He handed over his rule to his son, Sumbat II. After stepping down, David I became a monk. He passed away later that same year, on February 23, 943.

What Was a 'Mampali'?

The title mampali was a special one used in Georgia. A famous writer named Constantine Porphyrogenitus mentioned David I in his book, De Administrando Imperio. In this book, the title mampalis (μάμπαλις) is used in Greek. However, the book incorrectly translated it to mean "all-holy." It was simply a title for a ruler or prince.
